Shark nets in place across Australia, specifically in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, to protect beachgoers should be dropped as they have caused more harm than good, a study has found.

The measures was carried out by some governments, including nets and traditional drum lines, and provided beachgoers with a false sense of safety. The study found the effectiveness of nets was difficult to evaluate, while the significant damage they cause to other marine wildlife was clear. Researchers desire for non-deadly shark control measures such as eco barriers, which physically separate swimmers from sharks, sonar technology, and various shark-spotting techniques.

Researchers said while the risk of coming across a shark was rare, any shark-related deaths and injuries caught huge public and media attention.

One of the arguments in support of using shark nets is that just one shark-related death has  been reported in Queenland since the 1960s. Similarly, since the 1930s, NSW has had only one shark-related death. But there have been at least 13 people killed by sharks at beaches without nets on the NSW north coast over the past two years.

The Humane Society International’s head of campaigns, Nicola Beynon, said the government needed to move away from outdated methods. “Deadly shark nets and drum lines are more than 50 years behind scientific and animal welfare standards for dealing with marine wildlife,’’ said Beynon.

The NSW Greens’ marine spokesman, Justin Field, said, “People are 100 times more likely to drown at the beach than to be killed by a shark in Australia. Therefore, millions of dollars going into the shark net program should be directed to observation towers for our lifeguards and improving the beach devices. ’’

While the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea are just around the corner, attention is already turning to the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan as reports indicate that facial recognition will be used as a security measure at those games.

The Japan Times reported that sources confirmed the technology would be used to “streamline the entry of athletes, officials and journalists to the games venues.”

While spectators won’t be subject to the recognition treatment, the number of people from the groups that will be screened with facial recognition could total anywhere between 300,000 and 400,000, according to the Times report. The extra layer of security will come on top of ID cards that will also be handed out to those participants

The organizing committee tested the technology at Japan’s housing during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with moderate success though there were complaints of long waits. They hope to sort out the wait and other issues over the next 2.5 years ahead of the Tokyo Games which start in late July 2020.

NEC, the company handling the technology, also tested out their gear at two Brazil airports during the 2016 Olympics and is behind numerous other similar projects, including software used by the Chicago Police. Facial recognition is becoming more and more prevalent and the Olympics are just the latest arena to use them for security purposes. Other examples of planned or implemented facial recognition tech in use include robot police in China, bridges and tunnels in New York City, and more widespread (and questionable) uses by the FBI.

Hell, the technology also allows you to use your fancy new phone, ration toilet paper usage, and order fast food.

Tiantan Park, home to the iconic Temple of Heaven, is now home to six high-tech dispensers that mete out toilet paper only after conducting a facial scan, The Beijing News reported.

The pilot program kicked off after authorities faced an increasing number of local residents raiding the park’s restrooms for toilet paper.

It’s nice to feel like a hero or to be the center of attention every once in a while. Walking barefoot down the worn road, cheered on by the villagers of Brad stone, one would have thought that I should feel full of pride and joy. Those feelings might have been nice, except for this one tiny fact: I had no idea where I was heading, even when I heard my name being shouted out upon entering the village.

Earlier, after painfully recovering consciousness beside the road, the only important things I could remember were my name, Jonathan Grey, and a horribly uncomfortable feeling that I had forgotten something which could result in life or death. So I had followed the road. Shortly I noticed that I had somehow also lost track of my shoes.

Looking back at my younger years, I am sometimes amazed at how life has turned out. Nothing is exactly what I had originally planned for. The only thing that stays the same is who I am, my values, and my interests. If I could go back in time and hang out with my younger self  for a day, here’s what I would tell her.

1. Everything happens for a reason.

Without mistakes and failure, failure, failure, you would never have learned. Without pain, you would never have grown. Once you understand this, you will know that everything comes in to serve a purpose. So don’t stress or think that life is unfair, because everything happens for a reason. And only time will tell what it will teach us.

2. Focus on one thing at a time. You can have it all but not all at once.

It is not surprising that many of us are doing too many things at once. We need to make ends meet. But if you are working three jobs at a time, it is not likely that you will succeed at any of them. You have to keep your eyes on the big picture. You have to ask yourself what exactly you want to achieve for the next 10 years. Focus on one thing at a time. Achieve your goals one by one.

3. You can plan ahead, but your plan will definitely change when the time comes.

You can plan ahead because sometimes planning ahead can give you a clearer direction of where you want to go. However, plans will almost always change, so be prepared!

4. Trust your instincts.

Don’t worry too much about a decision you have to make. Just do what feels right. You know what you want. You might consult other people. But deep down, you know what you want. Do what makes you happy.

Because at the end of the day, even if you follow logic, you will want to quit and follow your heart.

5. It’s okay to be unsure about your purpose in life

You might be graduating or have hit a turning point with your career. You might feel a bit lost and unsure of where to go. It’s okay. Go out there and try as many different things as you can. Don’t ever feel like you’re wasting your time. Enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Every little path will lead you somewhere. And looking back, you will be able to connect the dots. It will all make sense.

6. Don’t try too hard with people

Don’t worry if you feel like it’s hard to make new friends. Just be yourself and be as open as you can. It might take a while until you find new best friends and a mate for life, but when  you do, you will know it. It’s not hard work. So, just do your thing and be yourself.
