Why does everything seem so much more simple and dreamy in the days gone by? Maybe it was lack of technology that forced us to be more personal or maybe the     11     pace of life that left you with time to “stop and smell the roses” .

I always hear my     12     talking about how simpler times were when there weren’t phones in everyone’s hands and the only     13     they had was sitting around listening to radio talk shows.     14     , were these times as great as we think they were? Do they     15     their enchantment to their distance in time?

I recently watched a movie entitled Midnight in Paris (2011). In this     16     film, the main character gets lost in the streets of Paris and at the stroke of midnight, a vintage vehicle     17     , the passengers encourage him to get in and he is transported to the 1920s, the age existing in his romantic     18     .

During his journey to the past, he realizes the people living in his “golden age,” long for the ages     19     theirs.

Using “The Roaring 20s” as an example, in an age of sustained economic prosperity and cultural edginess, things were not as pretty as the     20     of flappers and cocktail parties we all have painted in our minds.

21     the populations in cities grew, crime and political corruption became more     22     and even reached into the nation’s congress, and organizations such as the Klu Klux Klan began to form.

Same     23     for our parents and grandparents, who believe they lived in a better, simpler time.     24     all the hardships they faced and how, maybe, they are only remembering what and how they want to feel about the past.

Today things are growing and changing faster than ever. We have a world of knowledge  25     our fingertips; we have the ability to travel, move to new places and achieve things people in the past, and even our own parents, could     26     dream of.

Although I find myself thinking of what it must have been like to live“the     27     life,” I still think today is     28     than all the yesterdays.

Next time you hear someone saying they wished they didn’t live in these times, ask them about their travels or     29     they are able to talk with friends who live far away or in other countries.

While the past is something we should all     30     and learn from, I consider the present my golden age.

How many windows are there in New York City? Whatever your answer is, imagine if we could create a way to use each of those windows to turn the sun’s rays into electricity.

Researchers have designed a specialized solar-cell film that, when applied to the inside of a window, generates electricity from the sun while also reflecting certain rays to keep the inside of a building cool. It’s an important step if city skylines are to someday double as solar power plants.

Early window films produced a reddish color that architects found hard to work with and achieved a 6 percent power conversion efficiency rate—newer solar-cell window films can reach a rate of 22 percent.

The number may be lower, but the technology could turn an untapped resource—skyscraper windows—into a power source. Solar cell-infused glass could even be worked into smartphone screens to keep our devices running longer.

In 2015, the city of Portland partnered with a company called Lucid Energy to install power-generating turbines in the city’s gravity-fed water pipes. Like a mini hydroelectric plant, water flowing in the pipes spins turbines that generate power. Fifty feet of of these “LucidPipes” can generate 1,100 megawatt-hours of electricity every year (enough to power 150 homes), which is then sold back to Portland General Electric.

Cities also produce a lot of excrement, which, like the water, could work harder for us. In Grand Junction, Colorado, residents ’ poo works harder than most. There, the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant is converting 8 million gallons of human waste into renewable natural gas to power 40 of the city’s heavy-duty vehicles.

The Strata in London is a skyscraper that features built-in wind turbines. We can build functional roadways that include rugged solar cells. Mini wind turbines and solar panels fit nicely on myriad rooftops.

Windows that double as solar cells would be just another role-player in what’s turning into the 21st century urban energy boom.

33

What makes the solar-cell window films special?

A、They can turn the sun’s rays into electricity.
B、They can be applied to the inside of windows.
C、They can strengthen the signal of smartphones.
D、They can harvest energy and reflect rays at the same time.

34

A、Water has other applications.
B、A lot of water has been polluted.

D、Water resources are decreasing gradually.

35

What’s the best title for the passage?

A、The future of cities
B、Hidden energy in cities
C、Take a new look at water
D、Turn windows into power plants

The high school graduation season is ended on Long Island. Summer’s moving into high gear. The seniors have moved on, ready to begin the next stages of their lives. All the students in my junior English class are looking forward to senior year. All of them, but not me. I’ve been left back. Again. Stuck in junior English for the 32nd time.

I’ve been close to advancement a few times. One year I even spoke at graduation. It was a great honor. People applauded. And still, they didn’t let me graduate. September came around, and I was in the same classroom, reading the same books, knowing all the endings. Everybody else was a stranger. Everything was new for everyone else. I had no friends. Didn’t know a soul except Gatsby and Hamlet and Emily Webb. I comforted myself with the thought that this might be the year. I might finally move up and get out ofjunior English class.

But it didn’t happen. And now all the people in my class whom I gradually came to know and even like are gone. Moved ahead without me. I’ve been left back Again.

Isn’t high school supposed to be a passage? A journey rather than a destination? You endure it. You overcome it. Nowadays, before they even leave it, students become nostalgic ( 怀 旧的 ), remembering the good times. But what if you’ve never left? How can I look back when it’s right here all round me each and every year? Again. Over and over.

The people change, but the place remains basically the same.

Many things have changes: celluloid film ( 胶片电影 ) to VHS to DVD; the evolution of chalkboard to white board to Smart Board; and the rise of the ubiquitous smartphone. But the bell schedule, the calendar, the cheers at athletic events, the applause at concerts and plays, the snow days, the meetings, the crowded hallways, the excited chatter, the American flag flapping atop the pole in front of the building, these things don’t change. After all these years, that sameness provides comfort.

So, July and August will heal my bruised ego ( 受伤的自我 ). I have not been promoted. Again. No matter. A couple of trees in the backyard need trimming. A new path off the back deck needs building. I can awaken to the sound of the birds rather than before them. Sit by the fire pit and watch the stars appear in the darkening sky. Hopefully, by September I’ll be ready to meet some new faces. And I’ll start renewed. I’ll work real hard and do my best. I guess I’ll be OK, even if I get left back…again.

The next day was foggy. Charlotte’s web glistened in the light and made a pattern of loveliness and mystery, like a delicate veil. There, in the center of the web, neatly woven in block letters, was a message.

SOME PIG!

Lurvy felt weak. He brushed his hand across his eyes and stared harder at Charlotte’s web. “I’m seeing things,” he whispered. He dropped to his knees and uttered a short prayer. Then, forgetting all about Wilbur’s breakfast, he walked back to the house and called Mr. Zuckerman.

The two men walked silently down to Wilbur’s yard. Lurvy pointed to the spider’s web. “Do you see what I see?” he asked. Zuckerman stared at the writing on the web. Then he murmured the words “Some Pig.” Then he looked at Lurvy. Then they both began to tremble. Charlotte, sleepy after her night’s exertions, smiled as she watched. Wilbur came and stood directly under the web.

“Some pig!” muttered Lurvy in a low voice.

“Some pig!” Whispered Mr. Zuckerman. They stared and stared for a long time at Wilbur. Then they stared at Charlotte.

“You don’t suppose that …that spider…” began Mr. Zuckerman—but he shook his head and didn’t finish the sentence. Instead, he walked solemnly back up to the house and brought his wife to have a look at the miracle.

Wilbur was pleased to receive so much attention. Lurvy was still standing there, and Mr. and Mrs. Zuckerman, all three, stood for about an hour, reading the words on the web over and over, and watching Wilbur.

Charlotte was delighted with the way her trick was working. She sat without moving a muscle, and listened to the conversation of the people.

“You know,” Mr. Zuckerman said, in an important voice, “I’ve thought all along that that pig of ours was an extra good one. He’s a solid pig. That pig is as solid as they come. You notice how solid he is around the shoulders, Lurvy?”

“Sure, Sure I do,” said Lurvy. “I’ve always noticed that pig. He’s quite a pig.”

“He’s long, and he’s smooth,” said Zuckerman.

“That’s right,” agreed Lurvy. “he’s as smooth as they come. He’s some pig.”

When Mr. Zuckerman got back to the house, he took off his work clothes and put on his best suit. Then he got into his car and drove to the minister’s house. He stayed for an hour and explained to the minister that a miracle had happened on the farm.

“So far,” said Zuckerman, “only four people on earth know about this miracle—myself, my wife Edith, my hired man Lurvy, and you.”

“Don’t tell anybody else,” said the minister. “We don’t know what it means yet, but perhaps if I give thought to it, I can explain it in my sermon next Sunday. There can be no doubt that you have a most unusual pig. I intend to speak about it in my sermon and point out the fact that this community has been visited with a wondrous animal. By the way, does the pig have a name?”

He shook hands with the minister, and left.

Secrets are hard to keep. Long before Sunday came, the news spread all over the county. Everybody knew that a sign had appeared in a spider’s web on the Zuckerman place. Everybody knew that the Zuckerman had a wondrous pig. People came from miles around to look at Wilbur and to read the words on Charlotte’s web. In the days that followed, Mr. Zuckerman prepared special meals for Wilbur.

On Sunday the church was full. The minister explained the miracle. He said that the words on the spider’s web proved that human beings must always be on the watch for the coming of wonders. All in all, the pigpen was the center of attraction. Charlotte was happy because her trick was working and that Wilbur’s life would be saved.

请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一首150词左右的文章。

According to internet research company iResearch, the market of mobile payments reached 38 trillion yuan ($5.5 trillion) in 2018, about 50 times the US market which saw $112 billion.

Alipay, the digital wallet run by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, occupied 54 percent of the Chinese market, and WeChat Wallet owned by Tencent Holdings had 37 percent. Other third-party companies shared the remaining percentage.

“It is troublesome to get lots of exchanges while buying vegetables, especially when dealing with coins which are uneasy to carry,” said a person who likes to use mobile payments.

Another mobile payment user said “the services, either WeChat Wallet or Alipay, will automatically record the trades, like an account book, which helps to know where money has gone every month.”
