Truly happy and successful people get that way by becoming the best, most genuine (真实的) version of themselves. Not on the outside — on the inside. It’s not about a brand or a  26     . It’s about reality: who you really are.

Sounds simple, I know. The problem is, it’s very hard to do, it takes a lot of work, and it can take a lifetime to     27     it out.

28     worth doing in life is ever easy. If you want to do great work, it’s going to take a lot of hard work to do it. And you’re going to have to break out of your comfort zone and take some     29     that will scare you so much. But what’s the     30     of life if not finding yourself and trying to become the best?

That’s what Steve Jobs     31     when he said: Your time is     32     , so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t let the noise of others ’ opinions     33     your own inner voice. You have to     34     something — your gut ( 觉 ), fate, life, or     35     . This     36     has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

Now, let’s for a moment be     37     about this. Insightful as that advice may be, it sounds a little too     38     to resonate ( 共鸣 ) with today’s quick-fix culture. These days, if you can’t tell people exactly what to do and how to do it, it     39     deaf ears.

Not only that, but what Jobs was talking about, what I’m talking about, requires focus and discipline, two things that are very hard to     40     these days. Why? Because, focus and discipline are hard. It’s so much easier to     41     to distraction (分心). Easy and addictive.

There’s a business concept called opportunity cost. When you choose one course of action, you miss out on all the other opportunities you might have chosen to     42     but didn’t. People  43     stop to consider that until it’s too late.

And yet, the opportunity for adventure is right there in front of each and every one of us. Until you take it, you’ll never know what you might     44     . All you have to do is     45     the journey. So, take action!

A

Filling in company application forms can become a boring and repetitive task. Yet any carelessness on an applicant’s part can draw a negative reaction from readers. Each company or organization usually uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the same basic information, may vary in detail. Consequently, the suggestions below apply mainly to the approach you should take.

When visiting future employers, always carry your personal data record with you so that you can easily search for details such as dates, telephone numbers, and other useful information.

Treat every application form as though it is the first one you are completing—write carefully and neatly.

Use words that describe the responsibility and different aspects of each job you have held rather than list only the duties you performed.

Particularly describe social activities that show your involvement in the community, or activities in which you held a teaching or coaching role.

Pay particular attention of there is a section on the form that asks you to comment on how your education and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.

Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say shows a natural progression from past experience to the job you are applying for. If you can, and if they fit naturally, add a few words to demonstrate how the position fits your overall career plan.

46

Although all application forms demand the same basic information, ______.

A、different companies may take different attitude towards them
B、applicants may be required to answer all the questions in detail
C、applicants may have to send in the forms by person
D、different companies may have different requirements

47

When writing about the duties you have been engaged in, you should ______.

A、describe the responsibility and different aspects of each job you had
B、relate them to other major duties you were involved in
C、state only what duties you performed
D、put down your bosses ’ names

48

The best title for this passage would be “______” .

A、Nature of Application Forms
B、Job and Its Application Form
C、How to Fill in an Application Form
D、Importance of Application Forms

B

People who spend their days glued to networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter are more likely to be depressed, a U.K. study has revealed.

A team of researchers at the University of Leeds have conducted the first large-scale survey of its kind to find a link between the Internet and depression.

“The Internet now plays a huge part in modern life, but its benefits are accompanied by a darker side,” said psychologist Catriona Morrison, lead of the study team.

The survey was administered online, with ads placed on social networking sites, and 1,319 people took the tests. Participants were asked to answer questions in an Internet Addiction Test, Internet Function Test (to see what people use the Internet for most) and the Beck Depression Inventory.

Morrison and her team found that 1.2 percent were “Internet addicted” . When they were matched against non-addicted Internet users within the survey, the difference in depression ratings was significant; the addicts showed higher levels of depression than their non-addicted counterparts.

In addition, the team found a connection between the type of sites visited and the level of user addiction. According to the study, Internet addicts spent more time on “gaming websites and online community/chat” , whereas the non-addicted group visited a wider range of sites.

But Morrison give some warnings of the study. The Internet Addiction Test, although a useful tool in studying this modern-age addiction, is not a perfect method of diagnosis. New tests including measurements of social isolation and loneliness may provide a more accurate measure to continue research in this area.

“What is clear” , said Morrison, “is that for a small group of people, excessive use of the Internet could be  а warning signal for depressive tendencies.”

The study also leaves many questions unanswered. Do people become depressed because they are addicted to the Internet or turn to the Internet because they’re depressed?

Morrison hopes future studies of Internet users will help define what this link might be. “We now need to consider the wider societal implications of this relationship and confirm clearly the effects of excessive Internet use on mental health.”

49

What do we know from the UK study?

A、The Internet is mainly used to communicate with others in our daily life.
B、The use of the Internet has little to do with depression.
C、People addicted to social networking websites are more easily to be depressed.
D、The disadvantages of Internet use are much more than the benefits of it.

50

What’s the purpose of Internet Function Test?

A、To see the levels of Internet addiction among respondents.
B、To see what the Internet’s most common use is for people.
C、To show the levels of depression of the Internet addicts.
D、To show what effects the Internet has on people’s life.

51

What do we learn about the Internet Addiction Test?

A、It tells us the cause of Internet addiction.
B、It’s an accurate measure to study Internet addiction.
C、It’s not a useful method to study Internet addiction according to Morrison.
D、It’s less accurate than new tests including measurements of social isolation and loneliness

52

What can be inferred from what Morrison says at the end of the passage?

A、There are some other societal reasons leading to all people’s depression.
B、It is clear that excessive Internet use leads to some people’s depression.
C、The impact of excessive Internet use on mental health is not clearly verified yet.
D、It is very easy to define the connection between depression and Internet use.

An advisor close to French President Nicolas Sarkozy said “there are too many women teachers ” and that the situation should be “more balanced ”. “By reforming the whole profession, by offering a better salary, we hope to attract more men to the job,” said a source close to the president.

Like other Western countries, France has seen an increasing feminization of education over the past 60 years. The rate of women teachers in primary schools went from 65% in 1954 to more than 82% nowadays. In private schools it peaked recently at 91%. In secondary education, the gap is still present, although less extreme.

The causes for such disparities are well-known. Men turn their backs to teaching because the profession has lost prestige. Moreover, young men very often choose scientific studies that are more likely to lead them to job opportunities that come with a higher salary than teaching.

French researcher Jean-Richard Cyterman and Alain Lopes found that women, when asked why they chose to become teachers, usually answer “to be able to work with children” , or “to keep a healthy balance between professional and personal life” or “because it was a vocation” . A common response from men, in contrast, is that they wanted “to work in public service” .

In a 2008 report about working conditions in education, French education expert Marcel Pochard stated that an equal representation of men and women seemed to be “almost out of reach” . But national education authorities should be careful, he warned, and “try to avoid a complete feminization that could be blamed for giving a prejudiced vision of society to pupils” .

Is that why boys don’t do as well as girls at school? They’re more upset; they tend to fail more easily and a smaller number of them manage to earn high school diplomas. But things may be more complex. Studies carried out in several countries have suggested there is no obvious link between the teacher’s gender and academic success. What matters most is the quality of the teacher-student relationship, according to Michele Asselin and Gisele Bourret, two Canadian researchers.

Those who struggle the most at school are young people from poor families who also tend to be attached to traditional, stereotypical gender roles. “They sometimes challenge the authority of women teachers,” a French teacher says. Specialists agree on one point: there should be more men in schools, if for no other reason than to oppose the idea that education has become a “women’s matter” .

53
